Nursing home meaning in India: how it differs from a hospital

Ask someone in London or New York what a nursing home is and they will describe a residential home where older people receive long-term care. Ask the same question in Raipur, Lucknow or Pune and you will usually hear about a small private hospital where people go for a delivery, an operation or a few days of inpatient treatment. The same words mean very different things, which causes real confusion in online searches. This guide explains the Indian usage, how nursing homes are regulated and what to check before choosing one.

What "nursing home" means in India

In everyday Indian usage, a nursing home is a small private hospital, often founded and run by one or two doctors, with a limited number of inpatient beds. Many grew around a single specialty: maternity and gynaecology, general surgery, orthopaedics or medicine. A typical nursing home may have an outpatient department, wards and private rooms, a labour room and one or two operation theatres, and sometimes a small ICU.

Legally, the term is broad. Chhattisgarh's 2010 law on licensing of nursing homes and clinical establishments, for example, uses a wide definition that covers inpatient clinics, maternity homes, hospitals and similar establishments.

Nursing home vs hospital

Nursing home (Indian usage)Larger hospital
SizeUsually a few to a few dozen bedsOften 100 beds or more
SpecialitiesOne or a few, often linked to the founding doctorsMany departments under one roof
Emergency careVaries; some have 24-hour cover, others do notUsually a full emergency department
Intensive careMay have a small ICU or noneUsually several ICUs, including neonatal care
CostOften lower for routine proceduresOften higher, with wider back-up
FeelMore personal; the same doctors throughoutLarger teams and more shift changes

Neither is automatically better. For a routine, planned procedure, a well-run nursing home can be a good choice. For a high-risk pregnancy or a complex illness, a facility with an ICU, blood bank and specialist back-up on site matters more. Our high-risk pregnancy guide explains why delivery location is part of the plan.

Nursing home vs elder care home

When people outside India say nursing home, they usually mean what India calls an old age home, an assisted living facility or a geriatric care home: long-term residential care for older people who need help with daily living. If you are looking for that kind of care in India, search for those terms, and check that the facility has trained nursing staff and a link with a nearby hospital for emergencies.

How nursing homes are regulated

Licensing

Private health establishments in India must be registered under state law or under the central Clinical Establishments (Registration and Regulation) Act, 2010, in the states that have adopted it. In Chhattisgarh, nursing homes and clinical establishments are licensed under the state's own 2010 Act and its 2013 Rules: a registration certificate is issued by the supervisory authority, and a district committee inspects the establishment before a licence is granted. Running one without a licence is an offence.

Accreditation

Accreditation is voluntary but useful. The National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH) runs standards for hospitals and a separate programme for small healthcare organisations, which suits many nursing homes.

Specialised services

Some services need their own registration. Fertility clinics must register under the ART Act (see our ART Act 2021 guide); ultrasound centres must be registered under the PCPNDT Act; and medical termination of pregnancy can only be carried out at approved places under the MTP Act.

How to choose a nursing home

  1. Check registration. Ask to see the licence or registration certificate. It is usually displayed at the reception.
  2. Ask about emergency back-up. Is there a doctor on site 24 hours a day? Is there an ICU, a blood bank or a tie-up with one, and an ambulance?
  3. Ask who will treat you. Find out which doctor will operate or deliver, and who covers nights and weekends.
  4. Get costs in writing. Ask for a package estimate and what is excluded.
  5. Check scheme empanelment. If you rely on PM-JAY, CGHS or an insurance policy, confirm the nursing home is empanelled for your treatment. See how to check Ayushman card hospitals in Raipur.
  6. Visit if you can. Cleanliness, how staff respond to questions and how the reception handles records tell you a lot.

Your rights as a patient

The National Human Rights Commission and the Ministry of Health have published a Charter of Patients' Rights that includes the right to information about your condition and costs, to a second opinion, to records and reports, to privacy and confidentiality, and to non-discrimination. These apply in small nursing homes as much as in large hospitals.
